3 Day Juice Cleanse (aka 9 days of health!)

With the growing trend of juiceries and at home juicers, juice cleansing has become a much a easier task to accomplish. I try to do a cleanse a few times a year ~ either with the change of the season, or after a time of overindulgence (like the holidays). Juice cleansing (when done correctly) is a great way to give your digestive system a break, while riding your body of toxins that build up in our everyday lives. It's always a little easier to do a cleanse when you have the support of a friend, so last week, when my pal asked me if I would like to do a three day juice cleanse with her, I immediately said "yes!"

There a various ways to do a cleanse, but with a juice cleanse it primality involves drinking raw fruit and vegetables juices. I like to cleanse with mostly green juices because the fruit juice contains a lot of sugar. You can make your juices at home by purchasing local and/or organic produce and pressing them with a good quality juicer such as The Champion Juicer or Breville Juicer. Another option is to have a delivery company deliver fresh juices to your door every morning, or you can go pick them up yourself from your local juicery (I am lucky enough to have one right in my neighborhood). Yes, I could have made the juices myself, but I had a busy week. For this specific three day cleanse so I opted to buy my juice. I drank a combination of juices from Moon Juice and Beverly Hills Juice Company (both located in Los Angeles). It went like this:
1. Start day with 8 oz. warm lemon water
2. Cucumber, celery, kale, spinach, romaine juice
3. Lemon, apple, ginger, cucumber, celery, kale, spinach, romaine juice
4. Beet, lime, cucumber juice
5. Tumeric, red apple juice OR jalapeño, pineapple, cucumber juice
6. Cucumber, celery, kale, spinach, romaine juice
7. Almond milk with turmeric, cinnamon and cardamon

Slow & Mindful: I consumed each juice slowly, every two hours.
Hydrate: I drank lots of alkaline, room temperature water. Every other glass of water consumed, I added one tablespoon of De Souzas Liquid Chlorophyll mixed in. Chlorophyll (found in most green veggies) is a powerful detoxer and great for strengthening your immune system, building red blood cells and easing inflammation. I ended the day with Lily Of The Desert Aloe Vera Juice in water. Aloe juice has been a debatable topic, but all in all, it is jam packed with vitamins, amino acids and minerals, detoxifies, aids in digestion and regulates weight and energy levels.
Beautify: Anytime I am cleansing, I like to treat myself to home facials and body scrubs (after all, the skin is our largest organ), along with epsom salt baths and the occasional massage.
Move it: I try not to overexert myself during this time, but it is important to keep it moving! Instead of running or working out hardcore, I go on long walks, stretch and practice gentle yoga, pilates or take Myara's Power Plate Class:).
R&R: I try to get under the covers early during cleanse days to get a good rest.

Not only is it important to give your body a little TLC during this cleansing time, but by doing the things discussed above, it is a great way to distract yourself from not chewing down your favorite meal. Speaking of meals...one of the most important components to a cleanse are the days leading up to a cleanse and the days coming off of a cleanse. You really should look at a three day juice cleanse as nine full days. Three days before you begin your juice cleanse, you should cut out all caffeine and processed foods while drinking lots of water and a consuming a clean diet ~ I recommend vegetarian foods. Day two consists of soups, shakes and salads. Day three just soups and shakes. The next three days are your juices. Day seven begins the transition off of juices, which you begin with shakes and soups. Day eight consists of shakes, soups and salads. Finally, day nine (last day, yay!) you will eat a clean, vegetarian diet.

You may experience headaches and/or flu like symptoms during the cleanse...but this is totally normal because your body is detoxing. You also may get slightly moody...this is when you need to lean on your cleanse buddy to help you get over those hurdles! Once you are halfway through the cleanse, I guarantee that you will feel euphoric! And by the end of it all, you will feel lighter, more energized, have a clearer mind and glowing skin. Juice cleansing may not be for everyone, so if you have any health concerns it is important to contact your doctor to make sure that it is the right time for you.
