A Heart-Healthy Watermelon Cocktail

A Heart-Healthy Watermelon Cocktail

IMG_3654.jpeg

Watermelon is the perfect summer fruit... sweet and hydrating, it compliments any beach day, pool party or backyard BBQ.  Besides cooling down the body, swapping water for watermelon juice reduces body fat, lowers LDL cholesterol and cleans heart-threatening plaque from arteries. Watermelon is also one of the few food sources of citrulline, a protein that's a real powerhouse. With only 96 calories per 2 cups, you can happily sip the day away... but don't forget about the rind. Next time you are about to through away the rind, think again. Watermelon rinds offer a high dose of cirulline amino acid, which helps dilate blood vessels, improving blood circulation. The easiest way to take advantage of the health benefits of the watermelon rind is to blend a whole piece of watermelon with lime and create your own delicious slushy or smoothie. If you’re in the mood for something with a little kick, add the blended watermelon rind to your liquor of choice for a heart-healthy cocktail. Our favorite artisanal mixologist, Karl Steuck, gives us the ultimate watermelon cocktail elixir that will turn any gathering into a festive summer soiree.
