Epsom Salt's Cure

Epsom Salt's Cure

I have always loved taking a nice, relaxing bubble bath. Something about being submerged in warm water, eyes closed and the sweet sounds of Enya softly playing in the background makes me really happy. (Okay, maybe minus the Enya and add a glass of wine.) But really, for me, there is nothing quite like taking a time out in a oversized tub. As a child (and even now), I was non-stop and slightly hyper. My Mom would always encourage me to take some alone time, zone out and enjoy the company of myself. I remember her running the bath for me, lighting some candles and allowing me some peace and quiet. Still to this day, even just the sound of the running water puts my mind at ease. After attending an alkaline health retreat, I realized the more powerful effects of a good soak - more importantly Epsom Salt baths.

Epsom salts are made from naturally formed minerals consisting of hydrated magnesium sulfate crystals. They are high in magnesium, sulfate and oxygen. When the sulfate is absorbed through the skin, it draws toxins from the body which reduces swelling, relaxes sore muscles and sedates the nervous system. Epsom Salts can be used for a variety of purposes. Here are just a few:

Beautiful Skin: Use Epsom salts as an exfoliator by massaging handfuls of salt over wet skin, starting at your feet and massaging towards the the heart/face area. Epsom salts can be very helpful in treating acne because of their alkalizing and antiseptic qualities. Once a week or so, you can mix a small amount of salt in with your regular facial cleaner to give your skin a healthy glow.

Soak Your Bod: Take some time for you by soaking your body (or even just tired feet) in warm water, 2 cups of Epsom Salt, 1/2 box of baking soda and your favorite scented bath oil. This bath is very alkalizing for the body (which is a good thing) ~ and will balance PH, cleanse the body inside and out and offer your immune system a boost...all while soothing aches, removing odors and softening your skin. Instant relaxation and detoxification!

Natural First Aid: Epsom salt reduces swelling of your sprains and bruises. Oh...and if you have a splinter, soak the area in epsom salt and it will draw the splinter out of your skin.

Hair-DO: Use Epsom salt to soak up excess oil from your hair by adding a few teaspoons of salt to your shampoo wash. You can also use as a volumizer by mixing in a tablespoon of salt to your favorite warmed up conditioner ~ just apply to hair, leave on for 20 mins and rinse.

Relief: Epsom salts act as a natural laxative and can assist in relieving constipation. The salts assist in the absorption of nutrients in the body, while removing the obstructions in the intestinal tract, bowels and liver.

Green Thumb: Being inexpensive, gentle and natural, Epsom salts have become very popular in organic gardening. It has been considered a gardener's best kept "secret" ingredient to a lively and lush garden. The salts enhance the soil and fertilizer's good energy to bring a deeper level of vitality and vibrancy to any garden.

All in all...thank you, Epsom Salts for being so versatile and wonderful. It is now time to light your candles, pour yourself glass of wine (be careful in the tub!)...or even better, a soothing cup of herbal tea. Let your brain turn off for a bit while you reap the healing benefits of your bathtub.
