Get outside and PLAY for a big boost to your day!
It really is important to get outside and PLAY!!! We loved this story out of Texas that reminds us how important it is for kids (and frankly adults) to pause their day to get outside and move around! Eagle Mountain Elementary in Fort Worth, Texas, has been giving kindergarten and first-grade students two 15-minute recess breaks every morning and two 15-minute breaks every afternoon to go play outside. Teachers were initially concerned over losing valuable classroom time and felt they may not have time to cover all the material. "There was a part of me that was very nervous about it," said first-grade teacher Donna McBride. "I was trying to wrap my head around my class going outside four times a day and still being able to teach those children all the things they needed to learn."
However, after 5 months teachers say that the kids are actually learning even more because they are better able to keep focused. McBride says that the students are paying better attention in class, they're following directions better, attempting to learn more independently and solve problems on their own, and there have been fewer disciplinary issues.
Parents are also seeing the positive results stating that they've noticed their children being more independent and creative at home, and they also say the extra recess time has helped their kids socially.
Eagle Mountain Elementary is one of four public schools in the Fort Worth area trying out LiiNK, a new program that boosts the amount of recess for the youngest students. The goal: to help children focus and learn better once they're back in class.
LiiNK was inspired by Finland's education system, which produces students who get some of the best scores in the world for reading, math and science.
Let the kids at Eagle Mountain Elementary and these other Texas schools serve as a reminder that sometimes it’s better to step away, get outside, and move around a little in order to operate at the top of your game! Work and school will thank you!
