I sway, you sway...we all sway for Sheswai!
Finally...summer has arrived! It's that time of the year when we get to show off more of our skin, fingers and toes! Want to bring some more color into your season? Looking for a less toxic nail lacquer that is free of of formaldehyde, toluene, and dip’s? Meet your new best friend...the beautiful Debbie Leavitt: Southern California native and owner of the super fun and playful brand of nail lacquer, Sheswai. I met Debbie a few years back while working a photo shoot. Her bright spirit and positive energy initially attracted me to strike up a conversation. When she asked me to sit down for a mani/pedi and take a break from running around, I couldn't resist. The result: healthier, happier nails...and a smiling me! What use on our body is just as important as what we put in our body! Check it: The Vibrant Beet: What drove you to want to help people to enhance their beauty? Debbie Leavitt: I honestly just loved doing nails and wanted to provide a service that made people feel happy & rejuvenated. Seeing the pleasure my clients got from my use of less toxic products and my custom blended oils and scrubs is what keeps me inspired.
TVB: How did you come up with the name Sheswai? DL: I made it up. I knew I wanted to create a brand of my own and was hanging on the beach playing the name-game with a friend... It means the way a woman moves; she sways ;-).
TVB: What do you find so unique about Sheswai compared to other polishes and brands? DL: Our packaging is really unique. I knew that I wasn’t trying to reinvent the wheel with my line, but I wanted the packaging to be special. Our sustainably harvested wood cap is the perfect touch. Also our marketing and branding is about more than just nail polish. I wanted to share a naturally glamorous vibe; being health conscious and mindful but still loving to dress up, wear heels and get dolled up. Our tag line reflects that perfectly, “Modern Glamour with a Rootsy Feel.” "Modern Glamour With A Rootsy Feel." TVB: I adore the names of your polishes ~ how do you come up with them? They make me smile. DL: The names are a reflection of me, my style…I’m a California girl born and raised and the names are quite literally words and phrases that I use. The many shades of Sheswai. TVB: “Honeyfox” may be my favorite version of a red nail color…ever! And I love, love, love “Good Vibes.” It makes me so happy. How do you come up with the colors? DL: Thank you! Initially I started with 7 colors that I thought to be the basics; something for everyone. The collection had grown to include colors that were on trend but also offering more playful brights, chic nudes, and luscious dark shades. I tried to fill in the gaps and offer something that may not be easily found among other lines that offer 20 of the same shade.
TVB: Can you give us some tips for maintaining a manicure and pedicure ~ and overall strong nails? DL: I think the best way to maintain is to keep your hands and feet hydrated. A touch of olive oil is my favorite way to freshen up dry cuticle and keep the color looking bright.
TVB: I have been told that you should only keep a color on your nails for a few days and then change it out. Is that true? DL: I think that if you are properly caring for your nails regularly then keeping the polish on as long as it looks good is fine. By properly caring for, I mean to file and lightly buff the nail plate to remove any stains or ridges and gently nipping any loose cuticle before polishing again.
TVB: Where can we buy Sheswai?! DL: On our website: Sheswai.com We also have a ‘where to buy’ tab on our site that lists stores by state.
TVB: Do you have a salon? How can we get in to see you for one of your famous mani/pedis? DL: I am no longer in a salon or spa. You can email me directly at email@example.com to enquire about rates.
TVB: What inspires you? DL: A lot! Music, nature, spirit, the vastness of the universe…people creating and believing in themselves with conviction, travel, art…LOVE! Get inspired! Creating a space for pieces that make you shine is a great way to make a vision come together! TVB: What are some ways that you decompress after a long day of work? DL: I love to gather with friends to cook, dine, chat. I love to get outside for a walk; sometimes just chilling with some music and my dog Mick.
TVB: Being a native to SoCal, you are used to the year round sunshine! What do you do to stay active and fit outdoors? DL: I’ve practiced yoga for several years and am continually growing in that practice. I love to get out to the beach, walk, ride my beach cruiser…and, I love a picnic!
TVB: What does living a vibrant lifestyle mean to you? DL: A vibrant lifestyle to me means feeling inspired and healthy in body, mind, and soul. It starts with the thoughts we think and the love we create, firstly for ourselves and then how we share that vibrancy. Kindness is cool.
