Reach for the Red Ones
Puzzled by the overwhelming selection of mouth-watering apples? Remember to reach for the red ones for the most nutritious and satisfying mid-day snack. Researchers recently assessed the antioxidant capacity of eight different apple varieties and found ripe red apples to be highest in two active flavonoids, epicatechin and procyanidin. These powerful flavonoids, most potent in the red skins, help reduce the risk of heart disease, cancer, and other inflamatory conditions while satiating your sweet tooth and refreshing you pallet. Before eating your apple, wash it thoroughly under running water with a vegetable brush to remove wax, pesticides and other contaminants….especially if it is not organic! Although much of the nutritional punch of apples is found in the skin, certain nutrient compounds with the similarly strong antioxidant activity, hydroxycinnamic acid, was found in the flesh. All apples pack a hearty health punch, regardless of variety, but if you have a choice, remember the redder the better.
