Summer Fruits for Summer Skin!

Watermelon is a seasonal summer staple that goes hand in hand with pool parties, beach days and lots of sunscreen!! Why? While summer fruits provide our bodies with natural hydration and cool us down from the sweltering heat, watermelon, cherries and nectarines (three of my favorites) also provide our skin with sun protection from the the inside out. These three fruits are not only quenching and delicious, they heighten our skins natural defense against wrinkles and sun damage. Now you can happily indulge on a delectable piece if fruit and protect your skin all in one bite.

Watermelon:
Thanks to the high water and lycopene content, watermelon is a perfect fruit to replenish the body’s dehydration. Lycopene helps protects the connections between the skins cells so skin is tighter, smoother and easier to retain moisture. A great shared summer food, watermelon is low in calories and filled with vitamins; such as vitamin A, which is great for eye health and is also an antioxidant; vitamin C, which helps strengthen immunity, heal wounds, prevents cell damage, and promote healthy teeth and gums; and vitamin B6, which helps brain function and helps convert protein to energy.

Cherries:
Only around during the summer months, take full advantage of these sweet and low calorie berries. With just a handful a day you can prevent puffy skin, enjoy a fresh summer glow and give your sun-screan some extra UV help. Thanks to the inflammation-fighting anthocyanins and melatonin, cherries aid in UV protection, while simultaneously promoting cell growth. Choose the tart cherries for the highest boost of melatonin. If that’s not enough, “Bing” cherries can greatly decrease the pain associated with swelling, tenderness and inflammation of the joints, by reducing the excess uric acid in the blood…the culprit behind the pain!

Nectarines:
Besides tasting heavenly, nectarines help correct the suns UV damage with its jam-packed rejuvenating vitamins and minerals such as lutein, niacin, copper, lycopene, as well as vitamins A, C and E. This 3-vitamin combo helps to decrease inflammation and free radical damage in the skin, slowing down the aging process and protecting the body from various diseases. It's also the perfect mid-day snack and great in smoothies!!
